Kevin Foster MP for Torbay has raised the importance of better dialogue with communities that are affected by development sites that require decontamination. This has come about linked to the fears of toxic fumes and contamination on the Hollicombe site, a former gas works by the local community.
The developers who are responsible for decontaminating the Hollicombe site before building works begins have not been forthcoming with information to allay the concerns of local parents and residents.
Kevin highlighted in Parliament today to the Leader of the House of Commons, Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP and other Cabinet Members that:
“The former gas works site at Hollicombe in my constituency is currently the subject of a housing development which will require major decontamination works to be undertaken this summer.
I have supported residents and the Head of Preston Primary School Mr Kenneth Kies, in calling on the Council and Developers to hold a public meeting to explain how they will do this safely, a request that has so far been declined.
Can we have a debate on how those undertaking developments that affect contaminated land can be required to explain how their works will be undertaken safely to the communities that surround them?”
Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP, Leader of the House of Commons responded with: “He makes an important point. It’s good to see an active Member of Parliament for Torbay making representations on behalf of residents…suggests he brings forward an adjournment debate to raise this issue directly with the Minister as it is a matter of concern…”
Kevin Foster MP will be meeting with local parents and concerned residents on Friday 10th July at 4pm, Hollacombe (sic) Community Resource Centre in Paignton.
