Kevin has been at the forefront of lobbying the Government to improve and enhance the resilience of the South-West rail infrastructure. A lot of money has been sent both by Network Rail and the Government since the line at Dawlish collapsed into the sea during the storms of February 2014. Kevin is clear that we cannot let this happen again and that although Mother Nature can be hard to predict, we need to ensure that the transport links to the South-West of England are kept open at all times.
On the 27th January, Kevin questioned the Prime Minister, David Cameron MP, regarding funding for the vital reports which are looking in to improving the South-West's rail. On the 8th February, Kevin sponsored and led on a Backbench Business Debate in the House of Commons Chamber, in which he called on the Government, Network Rail and First Great Western to continue to work closely to improve our rail service. MPs from across the South-West spoke in the debate and the Rail Minister, Claire Perry MP, replied for the Government. The railway line plays a vital role in the life of Torquay and Paignton, and not only serves local people but brings much valued tourists to our region all year round. It is a high priority for Kevin and he will continue to keep the pressure up so that the South-West gets the modern rail system it deserves.
