In this week’s Kev’s Column Kevin takes a look at the opportunity presented by the need for major refurbishment works at the Palace of Westminster.
The Palace of Westminster is an impressive building, yet what is less known is the large number of repairs likely to be needed over the next few years.
Many parts of its electrical, plumbing and drainage systems are antiquated which means a major period of overhaul is necessary. Yet this should not just be seen as a problem for Parliament, but also an opportunity to change perceptions of “Westminster” and move the focus away from a London dominated narrative.
In the long run parliament does need to be based close to the heart of the government it holds to account, but a period of refurbishment will give a one off opportunity to relocate activities outside of London whilst it is underway. Modern technology means there is no reason why an official in Whitehall cannot give evidence to a committee sitting elsewhere or paperwork supplied via secure electronic systems to an MP away from a Westminster office.
Being away from London for a period would also help shift the centre of gravity around our political debate. It is safe to say that if parliament was using daily the infrastructure across much of the country it may spur further improvements to it.
Sadly we are not likely to see Parliament come to the bay, but a move away from a London centric debate can only help our region in the long run.
