“County Bumpkin” Comments Demean Our Two Great Counties
Kevin Foster has slammed comments from a Lib Dem MP and Councillor which suggested Mayors in Cornwall or Devon would be “country bumpkin mayors”.
The comments from Cllr Steve Darling MP came in a press interview during the latest comical stunt involving Lib Dem Party Leader Sir Ed Davey who visited Torbay to paddle at a beach and feed Steve’s dog an ice cream.
Kevin Foster said: “Devon and Cornwall has been divided on the issue of a Mayor for our region, yet there will be unity in calling on Steve to retract his insulting remarks about our two counties. The idea our county would elect a “county bumpkin mayor” is an insult to the 1.2million people who live, work and make their life here in the beautiful county of Devon.
“I can only assume the heat has got to Steve that he thought a stunt paddling in the sea followed by this crass remark would do anything to promote our bay or his party. Yet it’s a reminder that when the comical stunts end the Lib Dems have nothing serious to offer.”
“My message to Sir Ed Davey, after today’s stunt, is get back on the train to London and leave the grown ups to deliver a Mayor who can make a difference for our bay and our county.”
