Torbay Hospital Rebuild Must be Delivered

Kevin with local residents who want to see the promised investment delivered.

The Building a Brighter Future project for Torbay Hospital (Click here for more details) would be the biggest single investment in South Devon’s healthcare services since the NHS was founded in 1948. It was committed to under the previous Government, with plans to deliver it at an advanced stage and construction on enabling works ready to start.

Yet in September 2024 Health Secretary Wes Streeting placed it on a list of projects “under review” and in January 2025 announced he was placing it at the bottom of "Wave 2", which will start at some point between 2030 and 2035. With the Government confirming it does not expect any work at Torbay Hospital to start before 2032. In contrast the project at Plymouth's Derriford Hospital, in a Labour held constituency, will start this year and is expected to be completed by 2030.

The promises made to local people in terms of investment in their health services should be honoured, not dismissed or denied. You can support this call by signing this petition:

“We the undersigned call on the Government to honour the commitments made to the people of South Devon and deliver the promised rebuild of Torbay Hospital.”

Thursday, 16 January, 2025
Local health campaigners have today (Thursday 16th January 2025) welcomed news Torbay Hospital’s Emergency Department will benefit from a £14.2million capital investment but called for the Labour Government to stop dithering on and deliver the major rebuild programme worth over £350m.

"Before the recent General Election there had been cross-party support for the delivery of this project and suggestions a change of government would threaten it were dismissed by those arguing for one. Now we must make clear the promises made to local people should be honoured, not dismissed or denied."
